Ā Mātou Tūapapa Toha Pūtea | Our Foundation
The Foundation continues to make an important contribution to Outward Bound. The financial assistance provided to the Outward Bound Trust exceeded $1 million, and included 209 scholarships, plus operating and capital grants.
Any New Zealand charity would appreciate having such strong financial backing for their operations.
The Foundation’s investments have grown to now exceed $24 million, and I would like to thank our donors who have supported this growth, and give special recognition to Georgia Ardill-Walker, who has worked so hard with Karla and the fundraising team to grow our bequest and alumni programmes.
Our investment portfolio comprises shares in Rangatira Investments, which were gifted to Outward Bound some years ago by Sir Roy McKenzie, and an investment portfolio which is competently managed by Mercer New Zealand. Both the shares and the investment portfolio provided good returns during the year.
Finally, I would like to thank my fellow Trustees, Del Hart, Brien Mahoney and Tim Watts for their support and wise counsel in guiding the Foundation for another successful year.

“It is the stories from the young people that inspire me. I just love to meet them and hear them speak about having more confidence and belief in themselves. As a former teacher I know how powerful positive self-talk and self-belief is for young people. I enjoy helping these special young people be the best they can be. I would also like to recognise the outstanding team and culture at Outward Bound.”Pip Duncalf - Hiringa and Tairawhiti Regional School Course Supporter

We are honoured to introduce the Kurt Hahn Club - a dedicated group of people who have made the invaluable choice to leave legacy gifts to Outward Bound.
Kurt Hahn, a visionary educationalist, believed in the transformative power of challenges, outdoor experiences, and character development. He laid the foundation for the Outward Bound movement, which has since touched the lives of millions. The Kurt Hahn Club pays homage to this visionary figure by following in his footsteps, nurturing legacy, and empowering future leaders.
Members of the Kurt Hahn Club are individuals who have chosen to leave a lasting legacy by designating Outward Bound in their wills, estates, or through other planned giving methods. Their commitment goes beyond a mere financial contribution; it symbolizes a profound belief in the power of Outward Bound's programmes to change lives.
Legacy gifts from the Kurt Hahn Club will be instrumental in growing the funding of the Outward Bound Foundation. These contributions serve as the bedrock upon which our organisation can expand its programmes, reach more participants, and create innovative experiences that continue to inspire growth and resilience. The Kurt Hahn Club are instrumental in enabling Outward Bound to venture into new horizons while staying true to our mission.
The Kurt Hahn Club is a testament to the enduring power of legacy gifts. As we celebrate another year of growth and transformation at Outward Bound, we extend our deepest gratitude to the individuals who have chosen to join this distinguished club. We look forward to celebrating the ongoing impact of the Kurt Hahn Club and the incredible opportunities it creates for young leaders embarking on their own Outward Bound journeys.
“Merv was a great advocate for Outward Bound. Thank you for all that Outward Bound has done for our family and the youth of New Zealand.” Carole Major, Merv’s wife.
It is with deep gratitude and admiration that we remember Mervyn ‘Merv’ Major.
Merv's Outward Bound journey began on his course in 1981. His profound experiences during this course shaped his life and inspired a lifelong dedication to our cause. Merv's belief in the transformative power of Outward Bound led to him becoming a Life Member, serving as a committee member in Tauranga for a significant period.
Merv became an Outward Bound Crew Member as a monthly giver, and spent many years spreading the word, handing out brochures and teaching young people in his community about our mission. Merv also supported his two children and three of his grandchildren to experience their own Outward Bound courses.
In a poignant gesture that reflects Merv's dedication, his family chose to donate the funds received from the sale of Merv's cherished car to Outward Bound after his passing. This act carries significant meaning, as Merv held a deep affection for his car. Merv had purchased the derelict car over 50 years ago and spent many long hours restoring it. The car was parked outside Merv’s funeral service, where his Outward Bound Life Member vest was draped over his casket.
The generous gift made in Merv's memory will be used to further Merv’s 40+ year mission of enabling young New Zealanders to embark on their own life-changing Outward Bound journeys.
In remembrance of Merv Major, we honour his four decades of service to Outward Bound and extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Major family for their enduring support. Merv's legacy will continue to inspire and transform the lives of future generations of New Zealanders.
