Anakiwa is the heart of Outward Bound. It’s more than just a place - it's an indoor and outdoor classroom, a logistics hub, a port, and a home for both students and instructors.

Every day, Anakiwa rises to meet the diverse needs of our organisation, supporting our mission of changing lives through challenge and adventure.

Leadership at Outward Bound means not only guiding people but ensuring the systems and spaces we depend on can continue to thrive. This year, we’re focused on shaping Anakiwa for the future. As part of our strategic planning, we’re conducting a decade-long stock take to determine what’s needed for Anakiwa to keep supporting our bold growth strategy of ‘One in Every Whare’.

In the short term, we’re prioritising essential updates to ensure Anakiwa remains a resilient base for growth and innovation. We’re replacing the Alex Black, our trusted logistics boat, to maintain our ‘safety shuttle’ capability. A new modern minibus will be joining our fleet, ensuring the safe and reliable transport of students and staff.

Infrastructure updates, like the replacement of our electrical switchboard, are underway - unsung but critical investments that keep Anakiwa functioning safely.

We’re also committed to refining our courses to meet the needs of today’s young people. Our review of the 16–18-year-old cohort ensures we can adapt our approach to leadership development for the next generation, as relevant tomorrow as we have been for the past 62 years.
